{"id":1764,"date":"2024-12-27T16:58:57","date_gmt":"2024-12-27T16:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/visavisuk.com\/general-arts\/"},"modified":"2026-10-18T00:05:04","modified_gmt":"2026-10-18T00:05:04","slug":"arts-and-culture","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/visavisuk.com\/en\/global-talent-visa\/arts-and-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Arts and Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arts Council England endorses Global Talent applications from dancers, writers, musicians, actors, visual artists and the practitioners who work alongside them, meaning directors, curators, producers, choreographers, designers and programmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the broadest of the arts endorsements and the one with the most detailed guidance, which makes it the most predictable route to prepare for. It is also the route where applications most often fail on technical detail rather than on merit: the wrong letter from the wrong organisation, evidence that falls a few months outside the five year window, and a piece of writing that turns out on inspection to be an event listing rather than a review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-disciplines-arts-council-england-assesses-directly\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The disciplines Arts Council England assesses directly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Combined arts:<\/strong> practitioners working across more than one supported discipline are assessed here. Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work, participatory events, festivals and carnival arts sit within this heading. Non performing roles are included too: programmers, curators, directors, producers and lighting designers all belong to this group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dance:<\/strong> ballet, contemporary dance, aerial, street dance, folk dance, traditional and culturally specific dance all sit within this heading. Social dance such as ceilidh (traditional Scottish and Irish folk dance), salsa and ballroom, along with entertainment dance and screendance (dance made for camera), can also be considered. Choreographers and curators are included. <strong>Competitive dance is out of scope.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Literature:<\/strong> poetry and prose fiction in print, digital, recorded or live form; graphic novels; children\u2019s literature; independent publishing; live storytelling; literary translation and literature programming are all considered here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Music:<\/strong> classical and orchestral music, baroque, chamber and early music, brass and silver bands, opera, choral music, folk music and contemporary music including pop, rock, jazz and hip hop all sit within this heading. Producers, curators, conductors and songwriters are included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Theatre:<\/strong> plays and narrative drama, musical theatre, physical theatre and mime, experimental theatre, comedy, pantomime, circus and puppetry are all considered here. Playwrights, directors, designers and dramaturgs are included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Visual arts:<\/strong> drawing, painting, original printmaking, sculpture and installation, performance art, digital art, ceramics, art photography and sound art all sit within this heading. Gallery specific design and graphic work, and lead curators, are included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-disciplines-arts-council-england-does-not-support\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The disciplines Arts Council England does not support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This list is long, and it is the reason a great many applications are ruled out: hair design, fashion make up, fashion styling, nail art, health and beauty; editorial, fashion and commercial photography; advertising and marketing work; art direction for campaigns; video games; music videos; commercial illustration; journalism; food writing; education and educational writing; museum management; podcasts; DJs who are not producers; tattoo artists; art dealers; toy makers; instrument makers; arts administration and front-of-house roles are not considered within this scope. The commercial design work that Arts Council England previously listed as ineligible, meaning graphic design, product design, industrial design, branding, service design and typography, is now assessed by the DBA. Design made specifically for gallery exhibition stays within visual arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"eligibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"exceptional-talent\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exceptional Talent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must be recognised as a leader in your field and be working professionally to produce outstanding work that is performed, presented, distributed or exhibited internationally. You also need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>regular professional activity in your field for at least the last five years<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>a strong track record in at least two countries<\/strong>, one of which can be the country where you live.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"exceptional-promise\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exceptional Promise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must show the potential to become a leader in your field, be at an early stage of your professional career, and have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>a developing track record showing that you have worked in professional arts settings for at least the last three years<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>a developing track record in one or more countries<\/strong>, which can include the country where you live.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember that Exceptional Promise leads to indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after five years rather than three. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/visavisuk.com\/en\/svc\/global-talent-visa\/\">settlement rules<\/a> for the detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no formal definition of \u201cinternationally recognised\u201d. In practice it is given shape by the two country test and by the quality thresholds applied to evidence: reviews written by named critics in established publications, and awards that are internationally significant and credible, are the kind of thing that counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-evidence-you-need\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The evidence you need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must meet <strong>at least two of the three categories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th><\/th><th><strong>Exceptional Talent<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Exceptional Promise<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Media recognition<\/strong><\/td><td>At least two examples of significant <strong>international<\/strong> media interest, from <strong>at least two countries<\/strong><\/td><td>At least two examples of <strong>national or international<\/strong> media interest, from <strong>at least one country<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Awards<\/strong><\/td><td>Official evidence that you have <strong>won<\/strong> at least one recognised award for artistic excellence that is internationally significant and credible<\/td><td>Official evidence that you have won at least one credible national or international award <strong>or been nominated for or shortlisted for one<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Professional visibility<\/strong><\/td><td>Documented work included in professional arts programmes <strong>in at least two countries<\/strong><\/td><td>Documented work included in professional arts programmes <strong>in one or more countries<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to provide evidence in all three categories. Valid minimum combinations include two media examples and two visibility examples; or two media examples, one award and two visibility examples; or two visibility examples and one award. You can submit a maximum of ten documents in total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-counts-as-media-recognition\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What counts as media recognition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the most misunderstood category. The evidence must be <strong>detailed independent reviews, critiques or critical appraisals<\/strong> written by <strong>named<\/strong> arts and culture critics in internationally recognised, established media. The critic must be named so that their standing can be verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Event announcements, mentions in event listings, press releases, interviews with no critical appraisal and your own promotional material do not count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-does-not-count-as-an-award\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does not count as an award<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s and doctoral degrees; student projects; awards open only to students; grants and bursaries do not count as awards here. Full scholarships or research fellowships are sometimes accepted for Exceptional Promise, but this is discretionary rather than guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"documents\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Document<\/th><th>Requirement<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Artistic CV<\/strong><\/td><td>Typed and detailed; it must set out your professional career and your education<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Letters of support<\/strong><\/td><td>Exactly three letters are needed, and no more will be accepted. Each must be no more than three sides of A4, excluding the author\u2019s biographical details<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Supporting evidence<\/strong><\/td><td>A maximum of ten separate documents. Each must be no more than <strong>two sides of A4<\/strong> and must come from <strong>the last five years<\/strong>. Each must be uploaded as a separate document<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-three-letters-how-to-prepare-them\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The three letters: how to prepare them<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the strictest part of the application and the most common source of technical error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Letter 1 must come from an established UK cultural organisation of national and\/or international standing.<\/strong> A UK based letter is compulsory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Letter 2<\/strong> must come from a different cultural organisation, either in the UK or overseas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Letter 3<\/strong> can come from a third cultural organisation or from a distinguished individual with recognised expertise in the field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You cannot submit two letters from the same organisation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each letter must be dated and typed, signed by a senior figure at the organisation, carry the organisation\u2019s logo and address, and include the author\u2019s <strong>personal email address and <\/strong><strong>direct telephone number<\/strong>. Each letter must be accompanied by the author\u2019s CV or biography setting out their expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The content must be written specifically for this application. It must describe their working relationship with you, your achievements and your position as a leader or emerging leader, your future plans, what living in the UK will give you, and the contribution you will make to cultural life in the UK. <strong>Generic reference letters and promotional write ups are not accepted.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"the-five-year-window\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The five year window<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your media coverage, the events where you performed or produced work, and the awards you won must all have happened <strong>within the last five years<\/strong>. There is no published exception: not for a career break, parental leave, illness or the pandemic. If your strongest work is older than five years, you have to plan your way around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"why-arts-and-culture-applications-are-refused\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why arts and culture applications are refused<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No UK based letter<\/strong>, or two letters from the same organisation, is a common reason for refusal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mistaking event announcements for reviews:<\/strong> an entry in a festival programme is not media recognition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unnamed critics<\/strong>, or content in publications whose standing the assessor cannot verify, are not accepted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evidence that falls just outside the five year window:<\/strong> there is no flexibility here. It is arithmetic, not discretion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Presenting grants or bursaries as awards<\/strong> is another frequent mistake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Working in an unsupported discipline.<\/strong> The out of scope list above is applied strictly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Applying for Exceptional Talent on a single country track record:<\/strong> two countries is a threshold, not a preference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Letters that read like references:<\/strong> a general piece about how pleasant you are to work with adds nothing to the application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"timings\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arts Council England\u2019s published target is to decide your application <strong>within eight weeks<\/strong> of the Home Office passing it on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arts Council England currently states publicly that it is receiving a high volume of endorsement applications and endorsement reviews, that decisions are taking longer than the target, and that it <strong>cannot give a definite timeframe<\/strong>. Endorsement reviews, which normally take 28 calendar days, are affected too. <strong>There is no fast track service.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plan accordingly. The visa stage takes roughly three weeks from outside the UK and roughly eight weeks in country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"prize-winners\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prize winners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winners of certain prizes skip the endorsement stage entirely. The arts and culture list includes: the Olivier, Tony, Bessie and Critics\u2019 Circle Dance awards; specific categories of the Grammy, BRIT and MOBO awards, along with international music competition categories including the Tchaikovsky Grand Prix, the Van Cliburn Gold Medal, Queen Elisabeth first prizes and the Chopin Competition first prize; WOMEX; the Booker Prize, the International Booker and the International Dublin Literary Award; the Hugo Boss Prize and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must have won the prize in your own name and the prize must appear on the list exactly. Other prizes given by the same institution do not count. There is no time limit on when you won it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"costs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total Home Office fee is <strong>\u00a3766<\/strong>: \u00a3561 at the endorsement stage and \u00a3205 at the visa stage, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). Is that a problem?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer \">\n\n<p>No, it is not. Arts Council England assesses professional recognition, not qualifications. Degrees do not count as awards, and not having one is not a disadvantage.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"faq-question-1792281435771\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question \">My best reviews were published six years ago. Can I use them?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer \">\n\n<p>No, you cannot. The five year window is applied strictly and there is no published exception. If your strongest recognition is older, the realistic options are to build new evidence before you apply, or to look at whether another route fits your current work.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"faq-question-1792281454273\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question \">Do I need to be represented by an agent or a gallery?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer \">\n\n<p>No, you do not. Representation is not a requirement. That said, a gallery or agency can be a good source for one of your letters, provided it is an established cultural organisation.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"faq-question-1792281468770\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question \">Is Exceptional Promise worth applying for?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer \">\n\n<p>This category has a real cost: settlement comes after five years rather than three. But it is designed for artists in the third year of their professional career or beyond whose recognition is still developing, and nominations count where a win would otherwise be required. If Exceptional Talent is not realistic, Exceptional Promise is a legitimate route rather than a retreat.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"faq-question-1792281485810\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question \">Can I include work I made as part of a company or team?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer \">\n\n<p>Yes, as long as your individual contribution is clear. If your name does not appear in the evidence, you need a document from a senior person at the organisation confirming it.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"faq-question-1792281501297\" class=\"rank-math-list-item\">\n<h3 class=\"rank-math-question \">Which arts roles are ineligible?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"rank-math-answer \">\n\n<p>Arts administration, front-of-house roles, journalism, commercial and editorial photography, advertising and marketing work, art direction for campaigns, commercial illustration, video games, music videos, podcasts, DJs who are not producers and a range of beauty and styling disciplines are not eligible. Commercial design moved to the <a href=\"\/en\/global-talent-visa\/design\/\">Design Business Association<\/a> on 1 July 2026.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 id=\"talk-to-us-about-your-arts-and-culture-application\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Talk to us about your arts and culture application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Arts Council route rewards preparation more than almost any other.
