This visa is specifically designed for elite athletes and coaches who are recognised as having the ability to make a significant contribution to the highest level of sport in the UK.

The United Kingdom is renowned for its rich sporting heritage and for being home to globally recognised athletes. This visa has replaced the previous Sportsperson (T2) visa and the sport-related category under the Temporary Worker – Creative and Sporting (T5) visa route.

Eligibility Requirements for the International Sportsperson Visa:

Applicants intending to apply for an International Sportsperson visa must meet several key criteria. To be eligible for this visa route, the applicant must:

• Be an elite-level athlete or a qualified coach,
• Be internationally recognised in their sport,
• Demonstrate that their employment in the United Kingdom will significantly contribute to the development of their sporting career at the highest level,
• Obtain a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a licensed sponsor who will employ them in the UK.

Visa applications under this route must be endorsed by a sports governing body recognised by the UK Home Office. It is essential that the applicant’s stay in the UK demonstrably contributes to the progression of their sporting career.

Rights and Benefits of the International Sportsperson Visa:

If you are applying for an International Sportsperson visa for a period of less than 12 months, you are not required to demonstrate English language proficiency. However, for visa durations exceeding 12 months, proof of English language ability is mandatory. If the initial visa was granted without a language requirement, applicants seeking to extend their stay beyond 12 months must demonstrate at least A1-level proficiency in English.

You may apply for this visa up to three months before the date you are scheduled to start working in the UK. If applying from outside the UK, a decision is typically made within 3 weeks. If applying from within the UK, the processing time may take up to 8 weeks.

The initial visa may be granted for up to 3 years and can be extended as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements. After completing 5 continuous years in the UK on this route with visa extensions exceeding 12 months you may become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

Your family members, including your partner and children, may join you in the UK as dependants.

You are permitted to take up a second job provided it is either related to your primary field of sport or appears on the Home Office list of eligible occupations. You may also engage in unpaid voluntary work. Additionally, you are allowed to play for your national team while in the UK, participate in sports broadcasting activities, and undertake voluntary positions. You may pursue educational opportunities as long as they do not interfere with your sponsored employment.

Application Fees:

The application fees for the International Sportsperson visa are as follows:

• For stays of up to 12 months: £298 per applicant.
• For stays longer than 12 months:
  • Applications made from outside the United Kingdom: £719 per applicant.
  • Applications made from within the United Kingdom for extension or visa type change: £827 per applicant.

Immigration Health Surcharge: This is typically £1,035 per year. The total amount payable will depend on the length of your stay.

To demonstrate that you can support yourself financially while in the United Kingdom, you must provide evidence that you have held a minimum of £1,270 in savings at the time of your visa application. However, there are exceptions to this requirement:

• If you have been legally residing in the United Kingdom for at least 12 months with a valid visa, you are not required to provide this financial evidence.
• If your employer confirms that they will cover your initial month’s living expenses in the UK, up to a maximum of £1,270, you may also be exempt from this requirement.

This financial requirement is intended to ensure that applicants will be able to support themselves upon arrival in the United Kingdom.
