The digital technology route may be the busiest of the Global Talent endorsements and by some margin the most misunderstood. This is not a visa for everyone who works in tech. It is a visa for people who build or run product-led digital technology companies, and that phrase decides more than anything else in the assessment.
Get the framing right and you have a UK visa with no sponsor, no job offer requirement and no minimum salary, one that lets you start a company from day one.
Is Tech Nation still the endorsing body?
Yes. The question keeps coming up because Tech Nation announced in 2023 that it would wind down when its government grant ended. The organisation was later restructured and carried on.
More to the point, the Home Office re-tendered the digital technology endorsing body contract and Tech Nation won it. The contract runs from 16 April 2025 to 15 April 2028 and includes two twelve month extension options. Tech Nation is named as the endorsing body on GOV.UK and in the current Home Office caseworker guidance.
Who this route is for
Tech Nation assesses two kinds of applicant.
Technical applicants
You must show proven technical expertise in current technologies: building, using, deploying or generating value from a technology company, or building technical infrastructure. The roles Tech Nation covers include:
- Artificial intelligence, machine learning and natural language processing specialists
- CTOs and VP of Engineering roles leading in house teams at scaling digital businesses
- Cyber security specialists
- DevOps and SysOps engineers
- Senior backend developers contributing to major technologies or open source
- Experienced data scientists and data engineers
- Experienced front-end and mobile developers
- Experienced UX and UI designers
- Experienced video games developers
- Hardware engineers, operating system engineers
- Principal software engineer roles
- Virtual and augmented reality developers
Business (commercial) applicants
You must show proven commercial, investment or product expertise in developing digital products, or in leading investment into significant digital product companies. The roles covered:
- Commercial and business leadership roles with profit and loss (P&L), growth or sales strategy responsibility
- C level roles at digital companies: CEO, CMO, CIO or Head of Operations
- Senior venture capital or private equity investors with a track record in digital
- People who have scaled product-led digital businesses
- Management of significant venture capital investments above £25 million
- Experienced product managers
- Performance marketing specialists with in house digital experience
- SaaS and enterprise sales leadership, B2B solution selling at scaling digital businesses
- Sector specialists in fintech, edtech and similar fields
Who is not eligible
Tech Nation does not assess these roles:
- Corporate roles or experience managing large corporate teams
- Junior investors and analysts without a senior investment history
- Service delivery, process delivery, outsourcing and consultancy, whether technical or managerial
- ERP consultancy, systems administration and related fields
- Experience gained at tech enabled or service companies: agencies, outsourcing providers, marketing companies, systems integrators
That last point is the most common cause of refusals. The company where you built your reputation must be product-led: it must make software or hardware as its product, or process data. A brilliant engineer whose entire career sits inside a consultancy delivering projects for clients is a hard case, however senior. A brilliant engineer at a SaaS company is not.
Eligibility
You must meet one mandatory criterion and at least two of four optional criteria.
Mandatory criterion
You must show that in the last five years you have been recognised by others in the digital technology sector as a leading talent (for Exceptional Talent) or as a talent with the potential to lead (for Exceptional Promise), and that you hold the technical or commercial expertise described above.
Exceptional Talent generally assumes five years or more of experience and a track record of impact. Exceptional Promise assumes less than five years and requires you to be genuinely early in your career.
If you have been a founder or a senior executive of a technology company in the last five years, you must include documents proving it.

You cannot use the same piece of evidence for more than one criterion. Each document counts once, against a single criterion.
Documents

Your CV and the three letters of recommendation are not counted within the ten evidence documents.
Each letter should set out your achievements, why you are a leader or a potential leader, how living in the UK will benefit you, how you will contribute to digital technology in the UK, and your plans for the future.
Examples of suitable evidence
Third party evidence beats describing yourself: coverage in recognised technology publications, keynote talks at named events, patents, open source contributions with verifiable adoption metrics, funding announcements, published research with citation counts, awards.
Say plainly that the company is product-led: do not assume the assessor knows your employer. Write down what the product is, who buys it and how it makes money.
Spread the evidence: ten documents that all prove the same thing make a weaker application than six that prove three different things.
Why digital technology applications are refused
- The company was not product-led: consultancies, agencies and outsourcing providers do not count, however impressive the work.
- Recycled evidence: using the same document against two criteria leaves one of them unsupported.
- Corporate experience instead of tech sector experience: running a large team inside a bank is corporate experience, not digital technology leadership.
Timings
Tech Nation endorsement decisions take 5 to 8 weeks. Tech Nation’s own advice: allow up to 8 weeks for the decision, 4 weeks for an endorsement review if you are refused, and up to 12 weeks to prepare a strong application.
The visa stage takes around three weeks from outside the UK and eight weeks from inside. At the endorsement stage this route is slower than the academic routes and roughly as fast as the arts routes.
Prize winners
If you have won a prize named on the Home Office digital technology prize list, you can skip the endorsement stage and apply straight for the visa. The list is short and applied strictly: you must be named as the holder of the prize and the prize must appear on the list exactly.
Should you consider a different route?
There are two comparisons worth making before you decide.
If you are an academic computer scientist, you may instead be eligible through the academia and research route: computer science sits with the Royal Society, and computing and communications with the Royal Academy of Engineering. The academic route deserves serious thought: the evidence file is far lighter, decisions are far faster and, most important of all, settlement comes after three years even under Exceptional Promise, whereas Tech Nation’s Exceptional Promise category takes five.
If you are a designer, the boundary matters. Tech Nation covers experienced UX and UI designers. Graphic, brand, product, industrial, furniture and service designers working outside digital products should look instead at the design sector route assessed by the DBA, which opened on 1 July 2026.
Costs
The total Home Office fee is £766: £561 at the endorsement stage and £205 at the visa stage, with the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) on top. Digital technology questions
Do I need to work for a UK company to apply?
No. All of your experience can have been gained outside the UK and you do not need a UK job offer. What matters is that the companies where you built your track record are product-led digital technology businesses.
I work at a consultancy. Am I eligible?
Consultancy experience is explicitly out of scope, whether technical or managerial, and so are outsourcing, service delivery and systems administration. If part of your career was spent at a product company, base the application on that period. If none of it was, this is a difficult application.
Can I apply as a founder if my startup has not raised investment or generated revenue yet?
Harder, but not impossible. Founders are specifically anticipated in optional criteria 1 and 4, and Exceptional Promise exists for exactly this profile. You will still need outside validation: selection for an accelerator, product adoption, press coverage, a technical achievement that gets noticed.
Does a PhD help?
It can support optional criterion 4, particularly alongside published and cited research. It is not required and it will not hold up an application on its own. If your profile is mainly academic, the academia and research route will most likely be faster and easier.
Can I switch to this visa from inside the UK?
Yes, switching is possible from most work and study routes, including Skilled Worker and Graduate visas. Visa stage decisions made from inside the UK take around eight weeks rather than three.
What happens if Tech Nation refuses my endorsement?
You can request an endorsement review free of charge within 28 days. The review reassesses the evidence you already submitted, you cannot add new documents, and Tech Nation aims to respond within four weeks. If you want to put forward a clearly stronger application, a fresh application is usually the better option.
