Applying for British Citizenship:
British citizenship is considered one of the most prestigious citizenship statuses in the world. It provides full legal rights, freedom of movement, and access to social benefits within the United Kingdom. There are several pathways to apply for British citizenship, and the most appropriate route depends on the applicant’s individual circumstances. For instance, those holding Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), settled status, or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme may follow different application routes.
If you qualify under more than one route, you are entitled to choose which one to pursue. However, it is essential that you continue to have legal permission to remain in the UK throughout your citizenship application process. ILR, settled status, or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme are all considered valid forms of legal residence. While the general deadline for applying to the EU Settlement Scheme was 30 June 2021, late applications may still be accepted if supported by reasonable grounds.
Being born in the UK does not automatically confer citizenship. This right depends on your date of birth and the immigration status of your parents at the time of your birth. Therefore, it is important to check whether you acquired citizenship automatically by birth. If not, you may still apply for citizenship through the appropriate route.
It is possible to travel while your citizenship application is being processed; however, you must ensure that your current visa or residence status remains valid. You must also remain within the permitted absence limits (e.g., no more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months). Once your application is approved, you are required to attend a citizenship ceremony within three months. If you are planning an extended trip abroad, this timeframe should be taken into consideration. There are two most common pathways to British citizenship: Naturalisation and Registration. This guide will outline the eligibility criteria for each route and provide detailed guidance on how to apply.
British Citizenship by Naturalisation
Naturalisation is a route through which adults who hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme may apply for British citizenship. This route is also available to individuals who are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen.

Who Can Apply?
- Children born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983, where neither parent was a British citizen nor held settled status at the time of birth, but where one parent later acquired British citizenship or settled status, may be eligible to apply.
- Children who have lived continuously in the United Kingdom for the first 10 years of their life may also qualify for registration.
The application fee is £1,481, and the average processing time is approximately 6 months.
Automatic Right to British Citizenship
Where one parent held British citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) at the time of the child’s birth, the child is automatically deemed a British citizen and does not need to apply for citizenship.
Citizenship Ceremony:
Individuals who have applied for British citizenship, met all eligibility criteria, and been approved for citizenship are required to attend a citizenship ceremony to formally acquire their new status. During the ceremony, applicants must make an oath or affirmation of allegiance, pledging respect for the rights, freedoms, and laws of the United Kingdom.
Ceremonies must be attended within 3 months of receiving the invitation letter issued by the Home Office. These events are typically conducted in groups but can also be arranged privately upon request. While the cost of a standard group ceremony is included in the application fee, an additional charge may apply for private ceremonies. At the ceremony, participants will receive a certificate of British citizenship along with a welcome pack.
Applicants residing overseas may, under specific circumstances, attend their ceremony at a British embassy or consulate. However, the timing and conditions set by the Home Office must be strictly followed for the ceremony to proceed.
