Standard visitor visas are divided into specific subcategories as explained in the first paragraph. When applying for a standard visitor visa, the application process must be carried out in accordance with at least one of these purposes.

  1. Visits for tourism purposes

Visiting the United Kingdom, organising a tourist trip, visiting family members or friends living in the United Kingdom, participating in volunteer projects registered with an organisation in the United Kingdom, transiting through the United Kingdom to another country, and participating in special programmes such as dance courses folk dances (up to 30 days) are eligible to apply for a Standard Visitor Visa. Your travel purpose may encompass several of the reasons listed above. The important point here is that your travel purpose should be explained as clearly as possible with supporting documents and specific information.

A visitor visa to the United Kingdom for business purposes can be obtained in the following circumstances:

  • Attend a job interview.
  • Attending a conference or seminar as a participant.
  • Negotiating and signing a specific employment contract.
  • Participating in a trade fair for the purpose of product promotion without selling products.
  • Receiving training or working for a specific task at your organisation.
  • To participate as a speaker for the purpose of giving one or a series of talks without receiving payment or seeking profit.
  • Conduct an audit visit to an organisation.
  • Monitoring a product delivery process.
  • For the company you work for:
    • Provide a short training session on your area of expertise or share your knowledge.
    • To work as an employee assigned by your company on an international project to be carried out in the UK.
    • Assemble, repair or dismantle a product that your company offers to a customer in the UK.

Each of these activities falls under the category of requesting a visitor visa for business purposes and can be evaluated under this visa.

The person applying for a work visa must be an archaeologist, artist, entertainer or musician, security guard, camera operator, driver, internal auditor, journalist or reporter, lawyer or expert witness, market researcher or analyst, personal assistant, professor from an overseas academic institution, clergy member, scientist or researcher, a member of a film crew, including a sportsman or sports official, tour group courier, interpreter or translator, actor, producer, director or technician, a member of a production crew supporting an artist, entertainer or musician, or a member of technical staff supporting an artist, entertainer, musician or sportsman. The list of professions is not exhaustive; applications may be submitted for any profession accompanied by documents related to your profession and an explanation of the purpose of your travel.

You can also apply for a Standard Visitor Visa for short-term visits for educational purposes. Specific educational purposes include: studying at an accredited institution (this includes English language courses) , conducting brief research related to your course abroad, undertaking an optional placement known as an ‘elective’ for students studying medicine, veterinary science, nursing, midwifery or dentistry, taking an entrance exam, retaking an exam or course module, or taking a doctoral oral exam (viva), If you have graduated from a medical, dental, or nursing school, doing an unpaid internship at a clinic, taking the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) test or the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) tests (if you fail the PLAB exam, you can apply to stay for an additional 6 months to retake the exam. If you pass the PLAB exam, you may also wish to extend your stay to undertake a free clinical placement or dental observation role. In this case, you may stay in the UK for up to 18 months in total.)

Under no circumstances can your training last longer than 6 months. If you wish to take a training course lasting longer than 6 months, you must apply for one of the following:

  • Short-term education visa – up to 11 months for English language courses
  • Student visa – For courses lasting 12 months or longer, run by licensed institutions.
  • Child Student Visa – If you are between 4 and 17 years old and wish to study at an independent school.

If you are a scientist, researcher or academic, you can participate in formal exchange arrangements with your colleagues in the United Kingdom, either as part of your job or independently. If you are a senior doctor or dentist, you may also conduct research, teach without a permanent teaching position, and engage in clinical practice without a permanent position. In such cases, you may apply for a Standard Visitor Visa.

What sets this type of visit apart from others is that it can be extended for up to one year. If you are in the United Kingdom and need to stay longer, you can extend your visit for up to 12 months for a fee of £1,000. During this period, your spouse and children under the age of 18 can also obtain permission to stay with you.

  1. Visits related to paid events

You can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa to attend an event in the UK with an invitation from a UK-based organisation or your client/customer. You must have a written invitation for the event you are attending, along with your professional credentials or proof of your qualifications relevant to the invitation.

You can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa to attend events you have been invited to as an artist, musician or professional in the field of art, culture and performance in order to perform, give a speech or lecture, participate in a jury or discussion panel, or take part in professional conferences.

Representing your client as a lawyer or legal professional, participate in sports organisations as a professional athlete, participate in lectures or a series of lectures as an academic, give a speech at a conference, test students or measure their experience, or teach or examine UK-based pilots in your own country in the context of compliance with aviation regulations, you can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa.

  1. Visits for health and medical treatment

You can visit the UK to receive specialised medical treatment in a hospital or other medical facility, to receive treatment in an NHS-affiliated hospital under a reciprocal healthcare agreement with your own country, or to donate an organ to a family member or close friend (or for organ compatibility testing). This medical visit can last up to 6 months, and all medical treatment visits exceeding 6 months can be requested for up to 11 months when applying for the initial visa, or you can extend your visit by an additional 6 months within the UK for £1,000, bringing the total duration to 12 months.

Persons under the age of 18 may also apply for a Standard Visitor Visa, but certain additional conditions apply to their applications. Throughout their visit, visitors must arrange for accommodation, travel tickets, and financial support for the duration of their stay, either by themselves or, if not possible, by their family or friends. Additionally, if the person under 18 is travelling alone, they must provide a written consent letter from their family or legal guardian.

Although the Standard Visitor Visa usually takes an average of three weeks to process, this period may sometimes be extended.

If you regularly visit the United Kingdom, you may prefer to apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa. This visa is valid for 2, 5 or 10 years. You are allowed to stay for up to 6 months on each visit.

In terms of application costs, a Standard Visitor visa can be obtained for £115 for a 6-month period. A Standard Visitor visa obtained for medical reasons costs £200 for an 11-month period. A Standard Visitor visa for academic purposes is set at £200 for a 12-month period.

Long-term Standard Visitor visas are available at different rates. A 2-year long-term Standard Visitor visa costs £432 and allows you to stay for 6 months per visit. The 5-year long-term Standard Visitor visa costs £771, and the 10-year long-term Standard Visitor visa costs £963, both granting a stay of up to 6 months per visit.
